In the Making provides free ten-week art classes that explore modern and contemporary art through an investigation of various art-making techniques. Students have the opportunity to discuss artworks in MoMA’s collection, meet practicing artists and curators, visit NYC cultural organizations, collaborate with other NYC teens on studio activities, and create self-directed works of art. Emphasis is placed on experimentation, discussion, and engagement with social issues relevant to youth participants.
DATES Each In the Making class meets once a week from 4:00 -6:30 p.m. on either Tuesday or Thursday. Classes begin the first week of October and run through December 17. Students must attend every session; absences for any reason will not be tolerated. Applications are due on September 24, 2010.
CLASSES
On the Line
Tuesdays, October 5–December 14; 4:00–6:30 p.m.
How many ways can you make a line? This class explores the ways artists have re-invented the line to create new styles of drawing. While debating the limits of conventional drawing, students experiment with different drawing techniques and materials to create their own line-inspired works of art.
Text & Image
Tuesdays, October 5–December 14; 4:00–6:30 p.m.
We live in a society surrounded by digital images—from cell phone cameras to high-resolution photography. This class investigates how photographs can change how we see the world. Students will learn how to think differently about digital images while creating their own final projects.
Food & Art
Thursdays, October 7–December 16; 4:00-6:30 p.m.
Whether it’s inspirational, nutritional, functional, or political, we can’t live without food. For many artists, food has long been a part of the art world, from still life paintings to kitchen design. This class will explore the intersection between food and art to create their own food-inspired artworks.
Social Architecture
Thursdays, October 7–December 16; 4:00–6:30 p.m.
How can architects create buildings that will change the world? Recently many architects have been designing buildings with a social purpose. Through an examination of architecture projects across the globe, students in this class will learn how to design structures that aim to alleviate poverty and reduce inequality.
In the Making classes are free. All art supplies are provided by MoMA. All New York City teens in ninth through twelfth grade (or equivalent) are welcome to apply. There’s no need for previous art experience—beginners are welcome!
